Pacific Development Completes First Phase of Vanuatu’s Rural Digitalization and Government Decentralization Program
March 28, 2024
Port Vila, Vanuatu

Pacific Development is thrilled to announce the successful completion of the first phase of the "Recovery through Integrated Service Delivery" project in Vanuatu. This initiative, generously supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), aimed to bolster digital connectivity and resilience in the TAFEA province, particularly following the devastating impacts of the twin cyclones Judy and Kevin in March 2023.

The project meticulously assessed the connectivity and electrical infrastructure needs across five key area councils: Aneityum, Aniwa, Futuna, North Tanna, and South Erromango. These area councils were chosen based on their strategic location and significant challenges in communication and coordination, which are crucial for effective decentralization and governance.

Key outcomes of the project include:

- Establishment of sustainable communication hubs and digital government services, enhancing both educational and economic opportunities for local communities.

- Enhancement of digital infrastructure to support disaster preparedness and response capabilities.

- Implementation of resilient renewable power solutions to ensure continuous operation of government services.

"We are immensely proud of the strides we have taken to connect the most remote communities in Vanuatu to the digital world," said Lauro Vives, Managing Partner of Pacific Development Consulting Ltd. "These efforts not only strengthen disaster resilience but also support the Vanuatu government's decentralization initiatives, bringing crucial services closer to the people."

The project also highlighted the community's enthusiasm and proactive engagement, which were pivotal in shaping the outcomes. "The success of this project is a testament to the collaborative spirit of the Vanuatu communities, local leaders, and our global partners," Vives added.

Looking forward, Pacific Development will continue to work closely with local and international stakeholders to further advance digital transformation in Vanuatu.
